Cancer Program Specialist

Job Summary:
The Cancer Program Specialist is responsible for assisting in the performance of all functions relating to an American College of Surgeons approved Cancer program including: follow-up, abstracting of cancer cases, tumor board, and all other Oncology Data Center functions.
Cancer Program Activities:


Helps prepare and attends Tumor Boards and performs appropriate case documentation. Compiles specified sections of the ACOS Long-and-Short-Term Patients Care Evaluation (PCE) Studies in accordance with the college guides as determined by the supervisor. Completes other PCE Studies and data requests assigned by supervisor. 

Completes an abstract in accordance with departmental policy and procedure manual (minimum of 15 abstracts every 40 hours worked). Abstracts within the ACOS and FCDS guidelines as determined by registry physician advisor and supervisor.

Identifies and abstracts all neoplastic cases to be included in the Tumor Registry. Reviews all pathology reports. Prints and reviews medical record disease index.

Initiates and maintains follow-up for all cases in the registry. Contacts discharged patients, their families and physicians to maintain follow-up information; also maintaining a 90% or greater follow-up rate. Enters all follow-up information into the data base as determined by random review by supervisor.

Maintains data quality assurance program. Assists in the correcting of error reports from the quality assurance-physician advisor review, FCDS and Supervisor. May assist if designated in preparing quarterly quality assurance report of center activities.

Obtains and reviews all appropriate medical records from Westside Regional Medical Center and Outpatient Surgical Services. Codes all demographic and cancer-specific information to meet compliance with the American College of Surgeons (ACOS) and the State of Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS).

Verifies treatment and/or procedure given to patients post-discharge by contacting physician's office as determined by random review by superior.

Requirements:- Certification or licensure as a Certified Tumor Registrar- Willingness to travel to workshops, seminars and other training programs- Must have knowledge of American college of Surgeon Standards- High school graduate- Courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Records- Work experience in a health care field- Excellent office skills with knowledge of computers
