Job Description
Assumes the responsibility for a variety of secretarial and support functions on the clinical unit. Coordinates activities such as patient transport, maintains the active patient charts and prepares the chart for medical records at discharge. Responsible for maintaining a business-like atmosphere and understanding of the appearance and decorum appropriate to it.

PRIMARY RESPONIBILITIES
1. Greets and provides assistance for physicians, other members of the health care team and visitors.
2. Answers the telephone and patient intercom. Records and relays messages and reports in an accurate and timely way. Answers inquiries and responds to requests within the scope of responsibility.
3.Assures that staff assignments and patient information appears accurately and timely on the patient board.
4.Operates the unit-based Hospital Information System including order entry, ADT, reports, etc.
5. Assists others with operating, maintenance, and trouble shooting problems with printers, computers, fax, beeper system and addressograph.
6. Maintains log/tracking for specific equipment such as beepers, laptops, and patient equipment. Facilitates proper notification, labeling and pick-up.
7. Responsible for face sheets/patient identification plates, including accuracy of information and necessary changes.
8.Responsible for the organization of the nursing station and surrounding areas, unit libraries, and maintenance of unit manuals and files.
9. Prepares and/or updates daily schedules, assignment, records and notices of patient procedures and tests.
10. Maintains supplies, equipment inventory, checks delivery and carries out any necessary follow-up
11.Accurately transcribes physician orders and within scope of responsibility carries out activities related to orders.
12. Reports status of work flow to oncoming secretary.
13. Makes appointments for patients as required, notifies involved people, and prepares appropriate requisitions or other charge forms.
14. Enters pertinent patient charges in computer.
Responsible for Assembly and Completeness of Patients' Charts Throughout their Stay:
1. Maintains correct order, affixes or enters patient reports.
2. Identifies chart deficiencies throughout hospitalization and upon discharge.
3. Assures final copies of computerized documentation are in the record prior to release to Medical Records.

Administrative Support:
1. Prepares various reports and statistical data as directed by Manager, such as: daily reports for the Administrative Resource Center, census reports, etc.
2. Carry out projects as requested by Managers.
3. Assists with on-the-job orientation and education of newly employed unit secretaries.
Safety and Infection Control:
1. Assists in maintaining a safe environment.
2. Incorporates infection control standards in daily activities.
3. Follows hospital policy and procedures regarding patient/staff safety.
Attendance and Reliability:
1.Adheres to standards established for attendance and is punctual.
Monitor Technician's Activities
1.Runs strips every four hours and pm.
2. Responds to monitor alarms and identifies for changes in rhythm.
3. Notifies RN of al new and/or life threatening rhythms.
4. Informs personnel that electro battery need to be replaced.
5. Maintains necessary supplies (i.e. electrodes, electrocardiogram tracing paper, batteries, clips) at central monitor.
6. Charges telemetry batteries when indicated.
7. Replaces EKG tracing paper.
Qualifications
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Developed communication, typing skills, basic computer keyboard skills and ability

MENTAL PROCESSES:
Requires intense attention, concentration, good visual, verbal, hearing skills, and attention to detail. Ability to deal with a wide range of personality types and ages is necessary. Ability to deal with diverse cultural backgrounds (i.e. Southeast Asian, Greek, Hispanic).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Light physical demands including: repetitive hand and wrist motion intermittent standing, walking, bending, carrying, seldom climbing, pushing, pulling or reaching above, lowering and lifting exerting up to 20 pounds of force. Some exposure to blood, body fluid and infectious patients. Prolonged periods of time exposed to CRT screen. External and internal applicants, as well as position incumbents who become disabled, must be able to perform the essential job functions. Satisfactory completion of a replacement physical examination.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
No Experience necessary.

EDUCATION REQUIRED
High School education or G.E.D. required, with additional education or experience equivalent to two years medical secretarial (preferred) or business school preferred.

Knowledge of medical terminology required.
