General Summary

Supervises the daily operations and patient accounting functions of the inpatient billing staff. Ensures that all inpatient accounts are billed in a timely and accurate manner, by the most effective means possible, to ensure prompt reimbursement.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Organizes and supervises the daily activities of the inpatient billing department.

2. Performs and monitors all personnel functions of the department, subject to established hospital and departmental personnel policies and in consultation with department manager.

3. Maintains a thorough knowledge of payor rules, regulations, policies, procedures as they impact the billing process.

4. Ensures that hospital patient accounts are appropriately billed in a timely manner, by the most efficient means possible; develops and updates departmental procedures in order to accommodate payor specific requirements and to expedite payment.

5. Works with representatives of ISD, Controls, and other hospital departments to ensure that the hospital's A/R system meets the requirements of third--party payors.

6. Develops and maintains effective professional relationships with representatives of payor organizations in order to facilitate appeals of payor decisions; interpret regulation or policy; gather information pertinent to current or proposed developments.

7. Works closely with department manager, sharing critical information and statistical data, developing strategies that will enhance the department's performance and human resources.

Minimum Knowledge and Skills required by the Job

1. Work requires the level of knowledge typically acquired through completion of two years of occupational/specific education or an Associate's degree in Accounting, Business or a closely related field and two to three years experience in Patient Accounts.

2. Work requires the analytical skills to resolve complex problems requiring the use of scientific, mathematical, or technical principles and in--depth, experienced based cross functional knowledge.

3. Work requires communication skills in order to effectively deal with conflicting views or issues and mediate fair solutions, and well developed writing skills.
