Under the general direction of an ophthalmologist and in accordance with established departmental and professional standards, guidelines and protocols, provides skilled technical support for the diagnosis and treatment of ocular disorders in-patients of all ages. Performs comprehensive and specialized ophthalmic examinations, interprets, evaluates and communicates test results and prepares recommendations for patient treatment and management. Implement treatment programs and conducts follow up for designated patients. Provides support for ophthalmology resident training program.

Position Details
* Performs comprehensive eye examinations upon physician referral. Verifies appropriateness of referral, contacting physician as necessary.
* Reviews patient medical history/record and selects, administers and interprets a wide variety of specialized tests and measurements, such as visual acuity, visual field, color vision and Fund us photography, in order to diagnose anomalies and assess ocular function. Identifies and recommends corresponding treatment and patient management options.
* Develops, recommends and administers non medical/surgical treatments and interventions for patients with specified ocular disorders, as directed/prescribed by an ophthalmologist.
* Designs and implements individual treatment programs and selects and applies corrective/therapeutic devices and materials. Monitors treatment outcomes, modifying or discontinuing treatment as indicated and communicating recommendations to physicians and other providers.
* Establishes and maintains professional relationships with patients and families. Explains examination procedures and results and provides instruction on prescribed treatment programs. Identifies patients'/families' specific needs and incorporates into patient care as appropriate.
* Serves as member of multidisciplinary team to plan and implement patient care and communicate patient needs and recommendations. Monitors, communicates and provides follow up services for designated patients.
* Provides technical and educational support for ophthalmology residency program. Conducts training in examination procedures and techniques and participates in weekly review conferences. Provides technical assistance and support for residents' clinic and consult service.

Minimum Requirements
* Bachelor's degree with coursework in Orthoptics is required
* 6 Months of related work experience is required
* Excellent communication and analytical skills are required
* Current certification as an Orthoptist by the American Orthoptic Council (AOC) or an equivalent level of certification from an accredited foreign program is required
