Project Description:
The National Children----s Study (NCS) is a long-term research project that will examine environmental influences on children----s health and development. The goal is to identify the causes and potential prevention strategies for a variety of child health conditions including birth defects, asthma, obesity, diabetes, injuries and learning and developmental disabilities. Researchers will follow 100,000 children from before birth to age 21 in order to evaluate how environmental influences interact and determine which aspects of the environment are harmful and which are helpful to children----s health and development. The Queens Vanguard Center, lead by the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine is one of seven national centers selected to lead the implementation of the National Children----s Study.

Job Description:
 

The Medical Assistant will be part of the Clinic and Birth Visit Team of the National Children----s Study, Queens Vanguard Center and will be responsible for the conduct of visits in both clinic and hospital settings with mothers and children. S/he will administer questionnaires and other exposure assessments, collect biological samples (blood, urine, saliva, cord blood, meconium) and physical measurements, and conduct neurobehavioral assessments on infants & children.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinic Visit Duties
X Schedule and coordinate appointments with study participants for clinic visit procedures including ultrasounds
X Conduct interviews using standardized questionnaires with study participants and instruct participants on self-collected sample and assessment procedures
X Collect biological samples (urine, blood, saliva)
X Conduct anthropometric (skinfold, upper arm, hip with waist circumference) and blood pressure measurements

Birth Visit Duties
X Conduct phone checks with participants to track pregnancy status
X Serve on on-call team of 4-5 clinical research nurses who will be called to hospitals where study participants deliver (~250 births annually)
X Collect or assist hospital staff in the collection of maternal and infant blood, cord blood, placenta tissue, and meconium samples.
X Conduct chart reviews
X Conduct infant neurobehavioral observations and assessments prior to hospital discharge

Office Duties
X Prepare forms, supplies and equipment needed for participant clinic and birth visits
X Receipt, processing (centrifugation of plasma/serum), and shipment of biological samples to the NCS Central Repository
X Data entry using NCS Information Management Systems (IMS)
X Conduct equipment maintenance and calibration
X Assist with other projects as needed
X Attend mandatory trainings (on-site and off-site), and team meetings

Job Qualifications:
 

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:
X Associates Degree or certification in Medical Assisting and/or certification as medical laboratory technician (MLT)
X Valid Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) license from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or be qualified to take the PBT (ASCP) licensing exam with at least two years of experience in a clinical setting
X Valid driver----s license and willingness to use personal vehicle for business (reimbursement at government mileage rate will be provided)
X Flexible work schedule including some evening and weekend hours
X Familiarity with basic medical equipment and instruments and capable of learning the use of such equipment in a controlled setting.
X Experience conducting medical tests and physical measurements on infants
X Ability to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and to work in a team environment
X Familiarity with basic computer systems
X Independent work initiative and strong organization skills

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
X Fluency in one language in addition to English and familiarity with Queens neighborhoods strongly preferred.
X Work experience in labor and delivery hospital settings
X Strong interest in children----s environmental health research and/or public health
X Familiarity with basic research methodology including standardization of procedures in data collection
