Job Description:
 

A Medical Assistant is responsible to provide clinical office support to Physicians (Surgeons). A Medical Assistant is responsible to provide patient care and administrative duties necessary to deliver quality patient care.

Essential Functions:

1. Fulfils patient care responsibilities as assigned with may include: checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room, assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.; assisting physicians with various procedures, charting, relaying instructions to patents/families; answering calls and providing pertinent information.

2. Fulfils clerical responsibilities as assigned which may included: sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc. completing forms/requisitions as needed, managing charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.

3. Prepare trip tickets, lab request and charts for new patients and obtain demographics, book surgeries, pre-testing, radiology procedures and other procedures as required. Confirm surgery and surgical procedure appointments with patients, operation room scheduling and Physicians. Mount Sinai Radiology Specials Department and OR pre-testing must be called to confirm whether or not all appointments have been kept by patients and documented in database.

4. Call patient the day before to confirm appointments. Confirm HDX's. Also, obtain pre-certification numbers, call patients regarding appointment, follow-up with patient per Physician request. Schedule Surgical Procedures by calling OR scheduling or special procedures to get date and time of procedure in accordance to patient's schedule. Prepare pre-certification form and distribute the billing office.

5. Determine the nature of patient visits, prepare patients for diagnostic treatment, and forward all information to the Physician. Perform and assist with various aspects of patient care such as calling in prescriptions to pharmacy, providing instructions to patients.

6. Give instructions to patients as per Physician request to the patients. Write and give patient Physician's notes as to the medication under general supervision. Write and give patient Physician's notes as to the nature of their visit including: disability forms, work status letters, worker's compensation letters. Complete all necessary documentation in patients' medical records in accordance with the Department's charting policy.

7. Coordinate patients' initial and follow up visits for evaluations, including addressing patients inquiries, scheduling clinical appointments as needed, and providing directions and information on accommodations.

8. Performs appointment scheduling and registration for patients as well as updating patient demographic and insurance information.

9. Maintain, adjust and confirm patient office schedule.

10. Checks and verifies insurance information (Internet, HDX and Medcard).

11. Maintains patients' medical chart (filing, Op Reports, test results, home care forms).

12. This position includes phlebotomy.

13. Perform and verify pre-certification for Hospital services.

14. Schedules surgeries, verifying times with patients; preparing charts, pre-admissions and consent forms.

15. Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.

16. Maintains adequate level of medical supplies by inventorying stock; placing orders.

17. Perform other duties and tasks as required.

Job Qualifications:
 

Qualifications for Candidates include but not limited to the following:

1. High School degree or equivalent.

2. Effective interpersonal and communications skills required. Excellent telephone etiquette.

3. Knowledge of medical terminology required

4. IDX and HDX knowledge is required.

5. Must be able to adapt to a growing and changing environment.

6. Certification as a Medical Assistant from an approved school or equivalent training and experience.
