Position summary:    The registered nurse performs therapeutic apheresis, blood collection procedures and administers blood products for adult and geriatric in-patients, out-patients and volunteer donors.  Integrates and connects the vision, value and goals of the organization into daily decisions, behaviors and actions.

Position Accountabilities
 
1.         Performs pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical activities in accordance with all established departmental policies and procedures to consistently provide appropriate care to patients/donors.    
 
            Criteria:
      Collaborates with health care team and patient to provide a plan of care based on nursing assessments, standards of practice and the medical plan of care.
      Assesses patients/donors for suitability of procedure, referring problems/questions to supervisory or medical personnel.
      Performs all therapeutic, collection and blood administration procedures according to established guidelines.
      Evaluates patients/donors for adverse reactions to procedure and provides appropriate intervention, when indicated.
      Demonstrates the ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives and choose the appropriate course of action.
      Utilizes problem solving skills in a variety of situations which demand corrective action.  Responds to non-routine situations requiring deliberate and timely decisions to be resolved successfully.
      Explains procedures to patients/donors thoroughly, provides assistance when necessary, monitors patients'/donors' comfort, and alleviates anxiety during procedures.
      Works well under pressure, remaining calm and organized.
 
2.         Performs and evaluates quality control procedures to monitor instrument operation. 
 
Criteria:                                                                                   
      Consistently runs appropriate quality control procedures, evaluates results and makes appropriate corrections.
      Verifies that quality control values are valid before using equipment.
      Consistently documents all out of range QC and resolutions.
 
 
3.         Performs preventive maintenance in accordance with established departmental standards and procedures.   
           
            Criteria:
      Performs scheduled equipment maintenance.
      Is consistently able to troubleshoot and repair moderately complex equipment malfunctions.
      Contacts appropriate repair/maintenance personnel when unable to resolve malfunctions.

A)        EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
 
      Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
 
 
B)        LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
 
            Current Missouri license.
            Current CPR certification.
 
C)        EXPERIENCE:
 
      Preference: Apheresis experience.
      Preference: Two years of medical/surgical nursing. 
      IV therapy and/or phlebotomy experience a plus.
 
D)        SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
 
      Good oral, written and electronic data communication skills.
      Good interpersonal skills.
      Ability to manage time, organize daily schedule to meet productivity standards and cope with professional       stress.
      Work requires the knowledge and skills necessary to provide direct patient care appropriate to patient population of specialty:
 
*        Adult (15 - 65 years)
*        Geriatric (>65 years)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
 
      Ability to physically perform necessary documentation in writing.
      Exposure to blood and body fluids.
      Exposure to blood borne pathogens and other biological hazards.
      Exposure to immunocompromised patients.
      Ability to input and retrieve information from instrumentation and laboratory information systems.
      Occasional prolonged standing, walking and sitting
      Occasional lifting and/or moving of supplies and equipment. 
      Occasional lifting, positioning and/or transferring of patients/donors.
      Intermittent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling.
      Occasional irregular hours related to on-call status.
 

Qualifications
