The unit secretary , under general supervision, is responsible for maintaining supplies and equipment, performing non-clinical nursing tasks, clerical, and receptionist duties for a nursing unit. Some of the tasks this individual will be responsible for include:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of proper business telephone etiquette and sound judgment in receiving and placing calls
2. Answers questions and directs visitors and the patients' family members in a courteous manner
3. Assist physicians and other hospital personnel with locating patients, charts, and answering questions at the time of request
4. Takes accurate messages and repeats key information to ensure accuracy
5. Provides accurate and prompt information to clients regarding departmental procedures and operations; refers non-routine questions to the appropriate person and department
6. Transcribes all routine physician's orders within one hour
7. Maintains a current Kardex for all patients
8. Communicates all pertinent care information to assigned nurse including immediate stat orders
9. Notifies physicians offices of all new admissions, transfers, consults and expirations
10. Maintains unit logs and census accounting for all admissions, transfers, expirations and discharges
11. Assembles patient record
12. Keeps the charts appropriately stocked with the necessary forms ( order sheets, progress notes, etc)
13. Files all laboratory, radiology, EKG etc reports in the chart
14. Assures that all pertinent forms are sent to the receiving unit when a patient is transferred
15. Transports items/specimens to department i.e. pharmacy, laboratory, central
16. Checks inventory and orders for needed supplies
This position requires high school graduation (GED) and one year related experience. Unit secretary training or health care experience preferred. Health Unit Coordinator certification desired.

h. Ability to write legibly.
i. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, patients, families, and physicians
