The SVP, National Facilities Services (NFS) will have the direct responsibility for managing all activities across a national shared services organization encompassing Real Estate, Facilities, Capital Planning, Construction, & Clinical Technology associated with facility services. Broadly, the position will support the Regional Presidents & the National Leadership Team in the development, delivery, & operations & maintenance of hospitals, medical office buildings & related facilities. The intention of the role is to manage the broad portfolio of facility & equipment assets across KP's physical footprint through 1) facility & construction management execution strategy (i.e., respond to the short, medium, & long-term patient care needs & growth objectives of Regions; help build the KP Brand; & guide the allocation of resources at the regional & national levels), 2) facility & construction management upkeep oversight (i.e., renovation & ongoing improvement), and 3) relationship management (i.e., developing credible stakeholder relationships & influencing key players).
The SVP, NFS will provide leadership across a real estate & facilities portfolio of over 64 million square feet in aggregate & a services organization of over 2,700 individuals. This executive will manage through direct reports who lead teams responsible for Delivery Systems Execution Strategy &Execution Strategy Planning &Design, Capital Projects & Construction, Real Estate, Security, Maintenance,& Facilities Support Services, Project Operations, and Finance.
Essential Functions
Work with regional leadership to define short, medium, & long-term needs for inpatient capacity including the need to replace or expand current facilities & the need to support market growth by acquiring and/or developing new capacity. Work with regional leadership & capital planning to select the optimum project delivery execution strategy to meet current & future capacity needs.
With the Regions & the Permanente Federation, as appropriate, develop alternative execution strategies (e.g. buying, building, partnering, affiliating, & contracting) to meet capacity needs while making the most effective use of organizational resources.
Ensure the integration of expertise & sharing of resources & best practices in the areas of facilities planning, patient care, work process design, information technology, & other areas which impact hospital operations to create care delivery designs that are cost effective & that support a high quality inpatient experience consistent with the KP brand.
Work with the Regions, the NLT, & the Permanente Federation, as appropriate, to create an organization-wide plan for the development of hospital capacity that prioritizes resources consistent with the overall strategies & needs of the organization.
Oversee capital projects, facility construction, & projects for the entire system, nationally, across all regions. Direct annual spend of up to $3 billion for multiple projects including replacement hospital projects, other clinic & medical office projects,& various plant maintenance & renovation projects as well as clinical technology projects (4,000 projects annually) & any number of region-wide programs, typically totaling $200-$350 million. Such programs include ADA compliance, HealthConnect, NPC-3, Pride of Place capital improvements, etc. Ensures design/construction projects are consistent with industry-best practices, NFS design standards, scope, schedule, & budgets.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree with Master's or executive graduate level work. Equivalent experience may be an adequate substitute for advanced degree.
The successful candidate should be a seasoned transformational leader with a strong track record of success in effecting change in complex environments. Specifically, the successful candidate should have at least 12 years of broad experience and deep knowledge in more than one of the following key areas with at least seven years in a senior leadership role: 1) integrated health/hospital delivery systems operations (P&L accountability); 2) hospital planning and design; 3) business development - evaluating potential acquisitions and investigating program diversification into new business and services; 4) mergers and acquisitions (evaluating acquisitions, partnerships, or joint ventures); 5) healthcare finance (volume, market unit revenue growth, and net operating revenue).
Thorough understanding of strategic plan development (business cases, models, and concepts); healthcare finance, capital planning, construction costing, and facilities development. Strong financial skills and business acumen with excellent strategic and analytical abilities.
Direct and demonstrated experience working in a large and complex healthcare, health plan, or hospital system or suitable scalable substitute.
Proven leadership, communication, partnership, collaboration, and influencing skills. Demonstrated experience working across functional and geographic lines, with strong ability to lead and coordinate projects/initiatives with multiple internal and external constituents at national, regional, and local levels.
Process excellence and performance metric development skills.
Proven ability to partner and effectively convene teams and gain commitment and support to achieve results that support hospital strategy initiatives.
Experience in achieving high results and optimizing performance within a highly complex and matrixed organizational structure. Must balance and represent multiple perspectives and priorities of the National program and regions.
Demonstrated success in developing effective working relationships with physician leaders, medical group staff, and labor partners.
